PERHAPS
THE MOST INNOVATIVE aspect of Thanksgiving Field
is not what was dug up but what's going to be
put back.
Very early on I had the idea of placing a time
capsule there called the Tally Ho Hoard.
And the contents were to be something that would
amuse and bemuse archaeologists and metal
detectorists perhaps several centuries ahead.
Hence the suggestion to all sorts of communities
that they might like to to include something
very simple that reflects a good cause or action
they're proud of supporting.
And in the same box will be some other cheery
items. So in the future, perhaps someone will
say: gosh, in 2014 they were rather nice - and
civilised.

What's happening with what was found in the
Field? |
|
-
Cartridge #1
is going to the Lyng and Disher
families in the USA as a
collective family heirloom
-
Cartridge #2
is going back home to Twin
Cities, Minnesota, where it was
made in 1943
-
Cartridge #3
is going to the city of
Schweinfurt via the churches
there as a symbol of
reconciliation
-
Cartridge #4
may be buried, or retained for
education, perhaps in the safe
keeping of the Thomas family at
Tally Ho Farm
-
Lump of
molten aluminium #1 is going
home to Long Beach where it was
made as a B17 in 1943, via Rosie
the Riveter Foundation to their
Park and Interpretive Center
-
Lump of
molten aluminium #2 has been
offered to the Boeing Aircraft
Corporation
-
The brass tag
labelled J.H.L. will be kept by
Tally Ho Farm to await the owner
claiming it, whenever
- The Two Pence coin is going
to HM Queen Elizabeth II, as a
token of her own wartime service
and mother of combat returner -
and as a bit of cash to spend at
Royal Ascot - perhaps via one of
the Royal household at Windsor
- The battered coin with no
identity will go to the
Reminiscence Group at Whitegrove
Library, who dug up eyewitnesses
to the B17's arrival in 1943.
- The small and well-ploughed
battered lock with known
provenance will be parked for
the present

What's going in to the Tally Ho Hoard Time
Capsule? |
|
-
The Hoard
will be buried in soil sent from
the Air Force Memorial Park in
Schweinfurt by Pastor Dieter
Schorn of the Lutheran Church
deanery there; and from the
airfield at Podington in
Bedfordshire, where the
Winkfield Flying Fortress
started from on 14 October 1943.
-
REJECTED WITH
THANKS - IDENTITY BADGE for
Gladys Williams of Winkfield
District used by her as a
riveter of Wellington bombers
during WW2.
-
CAFOD BADGE
from St Margaret Clitherow
Catholic Primary School in
Hanworth, Bracknell, reflecting
their long support for this aid
agency in fundraising and taking
part in national campaigns for
social justice.
-
BOTTLED
BREATHING SPACE from Sidcot
School in North Somerset, where
the Director of their Centre for
Peace and Global Studies says
"As a Quaker school this would
be a fitting alignment to
looking at a varied contribution
to war, we would certainly be
highlighting those that made
nonviolent contributions to
conflict." (She had written an
engaging letter in The Guardian
on how the daily silences in the
school had offered breathing
space for over 300 years.)
-
RIVETS FROM
THE CURRENT C17 PRODUCTION LINE
in Long Beach, California -
being arranged by District 5
Councillor Gerrie Schipske.
It's possible these may be
touched by Elinor Otto, one of
the Rosie the Riveters there in
1943 and still at work, to leave
some DNA for future generations
to analyse and marvel at.
- FLY2 HELP PIN AND WRISTBAND
provided by the charity's
team based at Cotswold Airport
near Kemble in Gloucestershire.
- BALLBEARINGS FROM
SCHWEINFURT provided by Michael
Schramp, the pastoral assistant
at St Josef's Church.
- PIN FROM THE SECOND
SCHWEINFURT MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION
- OBJECTS FROM THE TWIN CITIES
ARMY AMMUNITION PLANT in Ramsey
County Minnesota, being provided
by the County's Deputy Director
of the regeneration project.
- REDUNDANT BOOK DATESTAMPED
13 JUNE 2014 from Whitegrove
Library - finder in 3014 to pay
the fine.
- FAIRTRADE BADGE AND WOODEN
CRUCIFIX made by a Fairtrade
community in Bethlehem, provided
by the Social Justice Organiser
at Bracknell Catholic Parish of
St Joseph & St Margaret
Clitherow.
- BRASS RAF AIRCREW UNIFORM
BADGE made by Firmin of
London with no known provenance.
This is reminder of the gallant
ground staff at RAF Winkfield
who went to the rescue of the
B17 crew on 14 October 1943 -
and had to find their way back
to quarters in the blackout,
helped along by some colourful
use of language.`
- 1943 THREEPENNY PIECE - to
represent other metal workers of
WW2. With eight sides, this is
also a reminder of days before
Britain discovered the value of
decimal coinage...
- BALLBEARINGS made in
Schweinfurt by the Schaeffler
Company - one which has long
been in the city.
|
FAG-brand ballbearings from the Schaeffler
factory in Schweinfurt shown with soil from St
Josef's church in Obersdorf brought to the UK by
their pastoral worker Michael Pfrang
Gladys the Riveter Williams with her badge -
and the book about life in her factory.
Some of the items for the Tally Ho Hoard
Black Thursday badge from the Second Schweinfurt
Memorial Association; Fly2Help pin; CAFOD badge;
RAF aircrew button; threepenny piece; Fairtrade
badge |
