The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals | Microbiology Society

Just1 Conductor Hugh Gibbons says
I wrote the first version in 2008 with the then Millennium Development Goals in mind. The idea was to have simple words that would be widely suitable - and offer the opportunity for a cheery Yes!

Our Promises on Poverty are now updated, and channel the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.  Introduced in 2015, these are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by 2030.

NB1 As before, if you'd like to change the words - or pictures in the slideshow version - you're very welcome.

NB2 And if you have translations into languages other than English, do think send them in so they can be posted on this website for sharing far and wide.

Let’s stand up – to count our blessings and make some Promises to those suffering poverty in any form.

First, let’s start by listening  for the voices of those suffering poverty around the world coming from the south, north, east and west.  Now let’s tell them whey they can count on us to be of help.

We want a world that wants to end Food & Water Poverty.  Unlike us, millions of people go hungry all day and every day.  And millions of families also suffer without clean water to cook or drink or wash, or for toilets.  So shall we promise to stand up for them, and do what we can to make sure there’s zero hunger and clean water for everyone? Shall we?  YES!

We want a world that wants to end Education Poverty.  Unlike us, millions don’t get even basic schooling, or don’t progress to higher levels. Millions don’t have enough teachers, or equipment, or space to study properly.  So shall we promise to help make sure that the world has  quality education for everyone - everywhere?  Shall we?  YES!

We want a world that wants to end Health Poverty.  Unlike us, millions don’t have the medicines, vaccines, hospitals, doctors, nurses, services, social care or education that they and their families need to be and stay well. So shall we promise to help make sure there’s good health and wellbeing for everybody, everywhere?  Shall we?  YES!

We want a world that wants to end Fairness Poverty. Millions of people suffer inequality every day. Yet everyone needs treating with dignity, respect, justice and fairness to have decent working and personal lives. So shall we promise to do what we can to encourage peace, justice, dignity, human rights, and equality – for everyone? Shall we?  YES!

We want a world that wants to end Earth Resources Poverty.  Millions are already suffering the effects of climate change and damage to the environment and ecology - whether on the land or under the sea.  So shall we promise to help ensure that the many riches of our planet are cared for, renewed and shared fairly – and by everyone?  Shall we?  YES!

And finally, we want a world that wants to end Indifference Poverty. Millions of people suffer because not enough individuals - or governments -  care what’s happening. So shall we promise to be among the many millions who are concerned, and who do take action, and really want to see an end to poverty in every form, and everywhere?

Many thanks. Now shall we applaud each other and say Well Done for Standing Up Against Poverty & Inequality today?  YES!
