 an enlightening suggestion by

All StandUps have happened by e-mail and word-of-mouth - no money's needed - thanks to many kind and responsive people sharing and encouraging others to join in.

The very first Promises were helped along by a bishop addressing a conference of 100 heads of schools in his diocese. Later, one arranged for the Song to be taught to all schools. They in turn encouraged local parishes and other communities to take part.

So for this year it's the same. With one cheery idea.

You might like to form your own virtual choir or chorus - not on Zoom or in one place or time, to stand up and sing out as and when you can find a few minutes. You'll be in unison in what showing what you stand for - helping end poverty - however you take part.

Encourage others to join in Standup/Sing out in mid-October

If you're a staff member in a school or academy group, think of spreading the word to your counterparts locally, or contacts elsewhere - perhaps by email or social media.  And include updates on what you're doing in your newsletters to families and local media.

Ditto school councils - perhaps reaching out not only to local schools but any you have links with traditionally or overseas.

If you're a Director of Education in a council area or diocese, think of encouraging your schools to take part - and spreading the word to your counterparts.

If you're a bishop of a diocese - for example, CofE or Roman Catholic - think of encouraging your schools to take part.  Better still, as happened in 2008-10, declare yourselves a whole StandUp Diocese, so parishes can be drawn in, too. The same applies in other faith communities with or without schools.

If you're in a civil society organisation (CSO) such as an NGO, think of drawing StandUps to the attention of your members or supporters. It's something that complements your activities without competing for time, funds, or commitment.

Encourage those taking action against poverty all the time

School councils might think of writing to a familiar or other NGO/CSO to thank them for their efforts in support of ending poverty or the other Sustainable Development Goals. If it's an organisation with a local branch - think Red Cross, Foodbank, Salvation Army - you might invite them to join you in a StandUp/SingOut, or do their own.

NB You'll find being appreciated and told Well Done is greatly valued by them - not just funding.

Encourage people to take an interest - and take note of what you're doing

Tell your MP and local councillors why you're standing up against poverty.  And invite them either to join you or do their own StandUp/SingOut during that October week - perhaps with colleagues, families or friends. (And tell hughgibbons@just1.org.uk if they are!)

Tell your local papers, and any radio stations (and suggest the latter might like to hear you in action - either live or with a recording sent in.)
