Many schools, parishes, and other groups observe the anniversary of the assassination of Oscar Romero on 24 March - often with solemn services. But they may not be
aware it's also a United Nations Day created as
a
tribute to him -
the International Day for the Right to Truth
Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for
the Dignity of Victims. There are lots of UN Days throughout the year - and the list is below. Many schools have taken up the Just1 suggestion and mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on 17 October. And many have liked the idea of blowing a kiss to Malala Yousafzai on her birthday, 12 July, which is also about the global right to education.
The UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, spoke of that - and how schools can take part - in an inspiring letter to pupils at St Margaret Clitherow Catholic Primary School about their Gallery on which Malala features. You can read the full text at the Palmaditas page on the Spirit of Romero Gallery website.
"On 12 July this
year, Malala marked her 16th birthday with a
speech at the United Nations in New York,
telling the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and
an audience of over 500 children that "one
child, one teacher, one book and one pen can
change the world." So you might like to pick a few Days during the year, and observe them in ways of your own choosing - in classrooms or assemblies, with a few words or pictures. It's part of growing good citizens for the world tomorrow - in a way that Oscar Romero might well have applauded and encouraged.
